Introduction

1. This project is dedicated to typesetting and translation of Breviaries, Liber Horarum (Books of Hours), and Primers of the Roman Rite and Western Tradition, from the Medieval Period to the Modern Period.
2. Sources are taken directly from scans online, from Archive.org, Google Books, and various research universities and museums hosted online.
3. In particular, this page lists Breviaries of interest that have been gathered so far.
4. To facilitate this, LaTeX is utilized as the medium, outputting to clean PDFs that can be easily printed, or loaded otherwise into an editor for minor adjustments, making publication simple.
5. The LaTeX code and associated macros is open source, and PDF outputs can found in this GitHub repository, or directly below.
6. As a consequence of the nature of LaTeX, these files can easily be adapted to typeset Missals and other books of similar liturgical nature.
7. Priority is given to the Latin originals, so please be patient as English translations come along.

• 1563 Quinonez Breviary
• While there are many recensions of the Quinonez Breviary online, this version was chosen for being one of the latest before its suppression in 1568 under Pius V.
• This project was the first of its kind, starting in July 2022 and finishing around two years later. As such, it is a proof-of-concept that LaTeX typesetting of Breviaries are a viable project. Consequently, it has few macros and custom commands, for example, opting for manual bookmarking and header support.
• The Latin version is finished, while the English is incomplete.
• Latin Typography: Retains original u/v usage; e caudatas are converted to "ae".
• Latin Abbreviations: Words and abbreviations are expanded where marked by tildes.
• 1256 Dominican Breviary
• This is exercepted from Santa Sabina MS XIV L1, as described here. Given that the entire manuscript contains the whole liturgy, only the relevant Breviary and other relevant sections will be typeset. This version is also chosen for being textually short, as it is one of the earliest codified Dominican Breviary, and as such, has short lessons and a sparse Kalendar.
• This project represents the first book with an aim for future reusability, with flexible macros and templates to allow for forward compatibility and flexibility in layout.
• As such, there are two versions so far, a large edition, and a 'pocket' edition reminiscent of printed pocket-sized Breviaries. In the future, there is an aim for a version more in the style and layout of the 1909 Breviary, which has a modern layout for usability.
• Latin Typography: Uses modern u/v conventions, but keeps the medieval variant spellings.
• Latin Abbreviations: Words are expanded where marked by tildes.
• If it is viable, the Lectionary with full lessons will also be typeset at some future time.
• 1775 Mozarabic Breviary
• This project is more of a consequence of the Gothic Mockup project, which aims to create a Latin-English Web mockup of the Cisneros/Ortiz neo-Gothic Office, rather than a stand-alone LaTeX project. As such, it has minimal improvements compared to Quignones' LaTeX code.
• Currently there are no plans for an English PDF. Those interested in English will find the above link more conducive to reading and research compared to the original's layout.
• Book of Hours
• This is one many Liber Horaum as printed during the late Middle Ages. As such, the handwriting is neat and legible, being highly organized and standardized. Notably, this edition contains many devotional offices and texts.
• This is in the exploratory phase.
